So, this whole time, Captain America has been a sleeper agent for Hydra. That’s the new “twist” in the latest Marvel comic that has taken 75 years worth of American exceptionalism and flushed it down the drain. On Wednesday, “Steve Rogers: Captain America #1” was released with a plot that Marvel has been toying with since 2014. Cap fans everywhere hung their heads in disbelief in the last two words he spoke, revealing his hidden allegiance to the Nazi organization: “Hail Hydra.” And the world exploded. [5] Yes, that HYDRA — the ostensible villain of all three Marvel cinematic universe movies bearing the captain’s name, and his oldest enemy in the comics (other than possibly Nazi Germany). [4] In an interview with Time, Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort explained “It means on the most fundamental level that the most trusted hero in the Marvel universe is now secretly a deep-cover Hydra operative, a fact that’s really only known to the readers and to him. That makes every interaction he has with anyone take on a second layer, a second meaning.” [3] [4] [11] Writer for the Captain America series Nick Spencer said in response to the backlash, “I’m the most hated man in America today.” It was a response he said he actually wanted, but “we just have even more of it than we imagined.” [5]
The actor who has brought Captain America to life on the silver screen for the last several years, Chris Evans, was also shocked by the news, tweeting:Spencer responded with a bit of regret:
But then, nah:
Captain America was conceived in 1940, while World War II was raging in Europe and the United States was still staying out of it. For Simon, creating Captain America was consciously political. He was disgusted by the actions of the Nazis in Europe and wanted the U.S. to intervene. The first issue of Captain America showed Captain America punching Adolf Hilter. It sold nearly a million copies. [9]
The executive editor of Marvel Comics, Tom Brevoort, said that the current tensions surrounding the presidential elections created the perfect opportunity, in his mind at least, to introduce (read: ruin) the last remaining superhero patriot of America:
We’re currently in the middle of this very contentious presidential primary season where folks across America are feeling divided on a number of issues. This feels very much, at least to me, like it’s of the zeitgeist of the moment.
Brevoort added that he also wanted to make sure people were “paying attention” and of course, to sell more comics, when “Steve Rogers: Captain America #2” comes out. But he may have underestimated his fans’ loyalties:
This is a bigger story than it seems. Hopefully we’ve got this figured out. If not, you’re talking to me on the day I broke Captain America.
In addition to Cap/Steve Rogers being the exact opposite of what he has always stood for, Spencer used villain Red Skull to deliver a speech against the refugee invasion of Europe, because, you know, anyone who would have something to say against it is heartless and evil. Here is what the Hydra head states in the new comic:
I have just come from Europe — my homeland, in fact. And do you know what I saw there? It was an invading army. These so-called ‘refugees’ — millions of them — marching across the continent, bringing their fanatical beliefs and their crime with them. They attack our women, and bomb our cities. And how do our leaders respond? Do they push them back and enforce the borders, as is our sovereign duty? Of course not. They say, ‘Here, take our food. Take our shelter. Take our way of life, and then take our lives.’ Despicable. Your entire culture is under siege. The principles your country was founded upon lost in the name of ‘tolerance.’ Your religion, your beliefs, your sense of community — all tossed aside like trash. And you cannot even speak out against it, lest you be called a bigot!
This is what happens in Obama’s America (and when liberals run Marvel), because all heroic American icons, even fictional ones, must be subverted. [5] The Daily Caller think that “It’s dumb and it’s cynical and it won’t last.” [1] But it was Pablo James at Unapolegetically American who expressed it best:
Captain America was the ultimate embodiment of the American fighting man. Fuck Superman. He was completely unrealistic and, by the way, an undocumented immigrant. Did anyone ever see Clark Kent’s long form birth certificate? I don’t think so. And, as a reporter and a superhero, he was stealing TWO jobs that some American could otherwise be doing. Captain America on the other hand was a true, American born kid and a combat veteran. He punched Hitler in his stupid face, for God’s sake! Do you know how American you have to be to dress in a red, white, and blue costume and punch Hitler in the face? I don’t know, either, but the number is really high. Like way more American than your redneck neighbor with the giant flag on his pickup truck and the fireworks every weekend no matter if it is a holiday or not. Seriously, the Captain was like Clint Eastwood playing John Wayne in a war movie with Teddy Roosevelt directing and Thomas Jefferson writing the screenplay. I mean seriously American. But now he’s a filthy Nazi? This is unspeakable. [6]
Jack Kirby and Joe Simon just turned over in their graves, but big deal. At least it sells a few more units! In the meantime, however, it seems like some fans aren’t especially amenable to the change, starting the hashtag #SayNoToHydraCap:
Others tied the HYDRA twist to a fan’s recent exhortation Captain America be revealed as gay:
Writer Nick Spencer previously used his position at Marvel to mock Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s immigration stance. The Marvel scribe used a fictional terrorist organization called Sons of the Serpent to discuss “the mighty wall” along the U.S. border with Mexico. “Marvel does its usual thing of putting perfectly reasonable right-wing opinions into the mouth of an evil villain,” responded a CBR reader last week. “Glad I decided to not put this propaganda on my pull list. A Twitter follower asked Mr. Spencer on Sunday who drove him to “blind hatred” of “most, if not all, Republicans.” “It’s not blind. Kinda the opposite,” he responded. [7]
