In one of the most important issues of the year, social justice warriors are up in arms, having been triggered by the release of a new ‘Thomas The Tank Engine’ film. Even though the new film has been “modernised” and Thomas has been given several “diverse” friends of different nationalities, some think it is not multicultural enough and is therefore RACIST.
While Thomas’ 13 new friends span multiple nationalities, including Mexican, Indian, South African, Italian, and Scottish, SJWs are arguing that they exhibit cultural stereotypes, such as an angry Russian, a brash American and a meek Chinese train.
Some also pointed out that Thomas doesn’t have any black friends, and the film is called “The Great Race.” RACIST.
The SJWs also charge that there are only three new female trains, while there are 10 new male ones. They also argue that the German female train is too ‘butch’, and that the female Indian train is too sexy. SEXIST. Sky News even broadcast a live debate about whether the film was racist or not.
Remarkably, this is not the first time ‘Thomas’ has been branded racist. In 2014, a Guardian writer argued that the kid’s show was full of “subversive” messages, including the promotion of “imperialistic” values in it’s depiction of the ‘Fat Controller’. Tracey Van Slyke wrote:
“…these trains perform tasks dictated by their imperious, little white boss, Sir Topham Hatt (also known as The Fat Controller), whose attire of a top hat, tuxedo and big round belly is just a little too obvious. Basically, he’s the Monopoly dictator of their funky little island. Hatt orders the trains to do everything from hauling freight to carrying passengers to running whatever random errand he wants done, whenever he wants it done – regardless of their pre-existing schedules.
She also argued that the show is racist because the bad trains emit BLACK smoke:
“(For the record, all the “villains” on Thomas and Friends are the dirty diesel engines. I’d like to think there was a good environmental message in there, but when the good engines pump out white smoke and the bad engines pump out black smoke – and they are all pumping out smoke – it’s not hard to make the leap into the race territory.)”
YUP. RACIST.
Van Slyke also argued that because one male engine, James – normally a red engine, was giggled at for becoming pink in one episode, that is sexist.
YUP. SEXIST.
Regarding the latest effort to diversify ‘Thomas’, Van Slyke told The Telegraph: “I applaud the idea, but am concerned about execution. “There is a danger in reducing very complex countries and peoples to singular characteristics. If the trains are only defined by cultural stereotypes, the result will be a calculated, and destructive, nod to diversity and inclusivity”. she said. Of course, Van Slyke and the SJWs are missing one vital factor in all of this… THEY ARE ANIMATED TALKING TRAINS. This is not some kind of grand literary metaphor for the categorization of people and races into socioeconomic strata.
