No, despite what you may think, this is not a satire. A strange Belgian theater group named Ontroerend Goed presents a show called “Sirens”, featuring 6 women on stage who are supposedly acting out feminist related things. [1] The show features zoo-like shrieking, bad jokes, chant-singing like a short bus version of the Medieval Baebes, and some sort of mimed out male masturbation scene. [1] At first one can think that this was some sort of hoax perpetrated by YouTuber NateMakesVids, as that’s where the, *ahem*, “highlight” video is posted. But upon deeper investigation, this is a real thing, with real reviews from such sources as The Guardian and a full video of the entire “performance” on an artsy Vimeo channel. They shout, they scream they sing, with a feminist message about sexism today. The least we can say is that “Sirens features a lot of loud stuff from the women on stage,” note the Plymouth Herald. [3] “I can imagine some people thinking, ‘oh no, we’re not going down that road again’,” says director Alexander Devriendt. “But we still need to cover this subject. It is easy to say ‘it’s not a big problem here’ or that there are bigger problems in the world elsewhere, places where women have to wear the veil, that we should not be angry about things that are happening here. “But we should be because they are happening here and we can do something about them.” [3] The six performers give an hysterical view of life as a woman: dealing with role models, patterns of expectation, persisting inequalities, acquired rights, inner censorship and everyday abuse, as well as the “new-found liberties and joys of being a female in the free world”. [3] He explain in more details what the show is all about in an interview with The Guardian:
So you hear voices talking in a very rhythmical way, and that concert metaphor adds to the topics we want to discuss. We’re all dressed up like opera singers giving you a nice concert, but it’s not that nice. It’s all based on the rhythm – even the pieces of text are very rhythmical. […] The show is hopefully making people more aware of the fact that things aren’t already solved. We want to make people more aware that we still have to work on feminism, that there still is no equal treatment between women and men, and it’s up to everybody – up to women, up to men – to be just a little bit more aware of that.
