After a truck killed more than a hundred sheep, an organization of animal rights activists is asking for a roadside memorial in honor of the animals that terribly died. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the animal rights group, will fund the memorial for the dead sheep. According to the article of The Telegraph, a truck, which carried 390 sheep, had overturned and collided with another vehicle at a circular road in the town of Brentwood in Essex, England on Monday evening of July 13, causing the death of 120 of them. [2] The 270 sheep that survived the crash were placed in another truck and delivered to a nearby enclosed field. PETA asked the permission of Cllr Mark Reed, the mayor of Brentwood, by sending a letter to push through with the 10-foot memorial after the unfortunate deaths of the sheep. “Our memorial will let people know that the best way to prevent crashes such as this one is to go vegan, because sheep shouldn’t have to make terrifying trips to shearing sheds and abattoirs at all,” PETA said in their letter addressed to the mayor. However, the request was not adhered by the Brentwood Borough Council and the road safety organization RAC, saying that the event would “distract” drivers. “Whilst we acknowledge the sentiments of the letter, we would be concerned that a sign on such a busy road would be a distraction for drivers and cause more accidents than it prevents,” a spokesperson of the council said in a statement after receiving the letter from PETA. Elisa Allen, PETA’s associate director, said that such event is believed to be the only one and they will try to give the sheep the memorial they deserve. “To my knowledge there are no other such memorials, but that should not prevent us from trying,” Allen said in the article of The Telegraph. “We read about the crash and we thought it was a good opportunity to remind lorry drivers of the responsibility they have when they haul animals around the country. But sheep are individuals who feel pain… What we want is animals to be remembered.” [2] In addition, she said that the memorial could help remind motorists to make good decisions on the road, in order to prevent accidents where the lives of animals, people, or both are at stake. “The point is, we want to prevent further incidents like this happening and provide a little food for thought,” she said.
