Mohammad Hossain

With all the crap they are now showing on TV, it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. A 19-year-old student from the University of Illinois was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting his classmate — and he claims his sadistic actions were inspired by Fifty Shades of Grey. [1]  Mohammad Hossain reportedly brought his female date back to his dorm room on Saturday night and proceeded to re-enact scenes from the wildly successful film. First, he reportedly told the young woman to take off all of her clothes and leave on her underwear and bra. The victim told police she followed his directions, but that what happened next was not consensual [1] and later turned violent [2]   Hossain allegedly used belts to tie the woman’s hands and legs to his bed, covered her face with a knit cap, tied a belt around her feet and stuffed a neck tie into her mouth. [1] [2] [8] Hossain stuck a knit cap over her face and tied her hands above her head, binding. Then, the accuser testified, Hossain told her “I want to see you resist.” He then hit her repeatedly with a belt, harder and harder each time. Hossain then allegedly said “I want to see how much you can take” and “I want to see you cry.” [2] The victim testified that he pinned her arms down and raped her. “I was saying, ‘No, stop,’ shaking my head from side to side,” the victim said, according to the Chicago Tribune. [9] She says she screamed and cried and told him to stop, but that instead of listening, he reportedly took off her underwear and bra and continued to whip her.  The victim says, at one point, she was able to free her arms, but that he held them behind her back and continued to assault her. [1] Thank goodness his roommate returned home, which was when the victim says she found an opportunity to escape Hossain’s dorm room and call police.  The freshman was reportedly arrested later that night at the dorm and is being held on $500,000 bail. Police say he admitted he did something wrong, but said he was inspired by Fifty Shades of Grey. [1] [3] If convicted, the felony is punishable by six to 30 years behind bars, authorities said. [11] Students on campus are disturbed by the incident. “It’s crazy that he would allow a movie to make him do something like that or even make him think that it’s okay to do something like that to another person,” said UIC student Monet Felton. [7] Now, members of the media, bloggers, and others are taking to social media to blame the film for Hossain’s alleged actions–a notion that is not only ridiculous, but dangerous. [12]

She told the judge she met Hossain in a class, and they became “friends with benefits” and had sex “four or five” times in 2014. [13]  The alleged victim, a UIC freshman identified in court as “A.G.,” testified at the hearing that she had gone to see the film “Fifty Shades of Grey” the afternoon of Feb. 21, then accepted Hossain’s invitation to come to his dormitory.  She detailed how she accepted his offer to “do something dangerous” in his room. [19] At the hearings, Hossain’s lawyer, Joshua Kutnick, insisted the two were consensually acting out scenes from ’50 Shades.’ During her testimony the woman denied they were recreating scenes from the film. [3] “The two of you were role-playing the movie, correct?” Kutnick asked during cross-examination.  “I didn’t see it that way,” the accuser said. Outside the courthouse, Kutnick proclaimed his client’s innocence. [2] When she had finished being questioned by Hossain’s lawyers and prosecutors, the judge asked her whether she said anything to Hossain when he bound her wrists or while he allegedly sexually assaulted her. She said no to both. [2] In his closing remarks, Joshua Kutnick, Hossain’s lawyer, said that “every step of the way, the young lady consented.” [8] He, told reporters after his client was ‘happy that the truth is coming out. “It was clearly shown that this incident was consensual,” Kutnick said, according to the Chicago Tribune. “It was two college students who were having a sexual encounter and that’s all that it was.” [2] [3] [9] The charges  have been dismissed after a preliminary hearing in which the judge determined there was no “preponderance of evidence” that a crime had been committed. [19] Outside the court, after the judge dismissed the charges, the woman hurried past reporters in tears while members of Hossain’s family expressed relief.  “This doesn’t mean this is over,” Chiampas told Hossain. [8]  “They can go the grand jury and present additional evidence,” Kutnick said, “but today they chose only to present this one witness and the judge found that that was not enough. [19] Prosecutors have not decided whether they might still seek an indictment against Hossain. “Generally speaking, non-stranger sexual assault or acquaintance rape cases present unique challenges and can be difficult to prove due to the fact that prosecutors must contend with defense assertions that the victim consented to the sex act or acts and there are typically no witnesses to the crime,” Sally Daly, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, said in a statement. [4]  Having said that, the charges in this case were brought in good faith based upon the evidence available and in our view the victim provided very sincere and credible testimony at today’s hearing.” [19]

Hossain is a UIC alumni ambassador and his attorney said he does want to return to the school. UIC told ABC7 Eyewitness news that, due to privacy reasons, they cannot comment on his status.   [19] After being released from jail, Hossain reiterated that he was not involved in any sort of sexual assault and said he wanted to focus continue his education. “All that really matters is becoming a doctor,” he told the Chicago Tribune. “I have one goal in mind, and that’s what I’ll set my heart to.” [4]

He is involved with several university leadership programs, was a student ambassador to the alumni association, and is on the triathlon team.  [1] The victim says she had been intimate with Hossain in the past, but that the two weren’t dating and she hadn’t consented to the abuse she was forced to endure in the suspect’s room.  [1] But at the end of the day, there is nothing more despicable than  people who attempt to shift the burden of responsibility onto someone else or, something I find even more outlandish, onto a movie, TV show, or video game — especially when that person is 19 and should know better. [1] This dumb ass, whatever he may say, has NO excuse for not stopping and asking whether a woman is okay when she is screaming, crying, and clearly not enjoying herself.

The hit film Fifty Shades of Grey is an adaptation of the adaptation of the best-selling novel by British author E.L. James. The film, which stars James Dornan as BDSM-loving billionaire Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as innocent college student Anastasia ‘Ana’ Steele, spent a second weekend at the top of the U.S. and Canadian box office charts. Fifty Shades, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, has already racked up $410 million in global sales in less than two weeks, according to Universal Pictures. [3] The movie has been targeted by groups working to prevent domestic abuse, who say it promotes violence against women. [10] Since the Hossein incident, there are all sorts of articles on the Internet that lend blame to Fifty Shades, as though the movie could somehow force a person to assault another person. Titles like “Guy Allegedly Beat & Raped Fellow Student Because Fifty Shades of Grey” and “Student Arrested After Raping & Whipping Classmate While Acting Out ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’,” as well as past opinion pieces such as “‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Will Lead to Spike in Abuse of Women,” create a cause-and-effect connection between watching this film and committing abusive acts against women.
